Welcome to accountrain's new format for our monthly newsletter,
e-ccounting. Our intention is to continue to send you valuable tips and solutions to assist you with your bookkeeping and accounting needs.
This format is intended to provide you with general information on important topics that we feel you need to be aware of.
e-ccounting is intended to encourage open discussions with your accounting team to provide further explanation on the topic at hand.
Planning your year-end appointment with your accountant
I'm sure I don't have to tell you how busy accountants are at this time of year.  Did you know most accounting firms hold actual  scheduling meetings to ensure all "booked" clients are accommodated by being placed in a strategic timetable.
There are ways to ensure you are one of these "booked" clients.  Simply showing up to drop off your paperwork, and telling them your deadline is in one week, is not one of them!
What can you do to expedite your turn around time?
As soon as your bookkeeper(s) or accounting department know the books will be ready, call and make an appointment to drop off your file.  Once you've made the commitment, it is important to stick to that drop off date, as you have now been scheduled into their planned timetable.
When you drop off your books take this opportunity to make an appointment to pick up the finished product - your taxes.  This way the accountant now has to also commit to a deadline.
Next month's topic  ~  HST
As you are well aware the new HST - Harmonized Sales Tax was passed by the government in December 2009.  Although the official start date for this new tax, of 13%, is scheduled for July 1, 2010, there are many other dates, details, nuances and exceptions to the rules that you should know about, as it is your responsibility to set-up and maintain this new tax properly.
A quote from Collins Barrow Ottawa LLP (an accounting firm in Ottawa)
"... for anyone running a business, there is plenty to do to get ready. Some may think that the change is as simple as changing the rate from 5% to 13% but there is much more to do."
For more information about Collins Barrow, what they have to say about HST or to sign up for their upcoming HST seminar, go to www.CollinsBarrowOttawa.com
